The Evolution of Kho-Kho

The Early Foundations (1914 – 1945)

1914: The formal journey began at the Deccan Gymkhana Club in Pune.
Naming & Standardization: Lokmanya Tilak and Bhai Narorkar gave the sport its name and drafted the very first set of rules and regulations.
1923-24: The Inter-School Sports Organization began promoting the game, marking the start of its structured development.
1935: Official rules and regulations were formally published.
1936: Kho-Kho gained international eyes with a demonstration at the Berlin Olympics.
1938: The Akhil Maharashtra Sharirik Shikshan Mandal refined the rules and published an updated book.
1943 & 1945: Further rule refinements were carried out by the Mandal to modernize the gameplay.

1949: The game was demonstrated internationally in Sweden and Denmark.
1955: The Akhil Bharatiya Kho-Kho Mandal (All India Kho-Kho Federation) was established.
1959-60: The first All India Kho-Kho Championship was held.
1961: The first Women’s National Championship was organized.
